Note: My father, James Phil Kindel, told us that Philip Kindelberger immigrated to the United States from the Alsace region of what became, Germany following the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). He had taken the place of someone who had been drafted into the army and used the money for his passage. He settled in the Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio.
The Kindelberger family changed their name to "Kindel" following the first world war. My aunt, Jean Kindel Garvey (May 1999), indicated that she didn't know that the family name had been changed until she was pretty well grown up.
Aunt Jean told me that the family had a business in Cincinnati--she wasn't sure what it was. The family evidently also owned some property across the river in Kentucky and raised horses there.

George,
I found the entry of your Philip Kindelberger into New York. He came on the ship "England", sailing from Liverpool & Queenstown and arriving in New York on 21 Jul 1871. His name was given as Philip Kendelberger, 22 years, from Germany. I made a copy from the book 'Germans to America' & will send it to you. I can also get a copy of the original passenger list if you would like that.

Phillip Kindelberger was Naturalized in the U.S. District Court, Cincinnati, Ohio (Certificate C-601) on October 5, 1882. Country of birth is listed as Germany. Name of Witness is Matthew Eschenbrenner.
----------------------------
1890 Cincinnati City Directory lists Philip Kindelberger's occupation as "grocery" at 66 15th Street.
-----------------------------
1900 Census lists the Philip Kindelberger family. The family lived at 210 15th Street, in Cincinnati, Ohio in the western portion of Precinct B in Ward 10. Philip's occupation was listed as a grocer. He immigrated from Germany in 1871 and had been in the country for 29 years at the time of the census. His wife Mary immigrated from Germany in 1870. Philip is listed as a naturalized citizen (I believe wives became a citizen based on their husband's naturalization. This was, of course, prior to women having the vote). Eight children are listed, all born in Ohio. The oldest, Tillie was 24 years old. She and her brother, John (22), lived at home and worked as salesmen in a grocery--I suspect in the family business. Next came William (20), who lived at home, but had no occupation listed. Fred (18) was listed as a trimmer electric (?). George (16) also had no occupation listed. Lulua (13), Frank (11) and Florence (8) had "at school" listed in the "occupation" column. All except the youngest three children were listed as being able to read and write and to speak English.

Mrs. Anna Brock
Mrs. Anna Louise Brock, 78, mother of Mrs. M. E. (Florence VanMeter, 1718 W. Walnut St., died unexpectedly at the home of her daughter early Monday morning.
She had resided here with her daughter since last October.
Mrs. Brock was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 26, 1888 and was graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
On April 30, 1912, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was married to Dr. Earl E. Brock, who preceded her in death in 1966. She and her husband moved to Anderson the same year they were married. Dr. Brock was a practicing physician in Anderson for 54 years.
Mrs. Brock was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Anderson.
Surviving in addition to the daughter here are a son, James Earl Brock, Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. John Paul, Cincinnati; two brothers, Fred and Frank Kindel, both of Cincinnati, and five grandsons.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Jacobs Funeral Home.
-------------------------------------
Brock Rites
Private funeral services for Mrs. Anna Louise Brock, 78, 1718 W. Walnut St., will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the First Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. John J. Staton officiating. Burial will be in Indianapolis.
The family prefers memorial donations to St. John's Hospital in Anderson.
There will be no visiting hours at the Jacobs Funeral Home.
--------------------------------------
There are discrepancies regarding Anna Louise Kindelberger Brock's birthdate. Her obituary clearly states that she was born November 26, 1888. However, she is listed as 13 on the 1900 census and 22 on the 1910 census. Based on this, I believe that she was probably born in November 1886 or possibly 1887, but probably not 1888. It would not have been possible for her to have been born in November 1888, when Frank was born in June 1888. Frank is one of the few of the Kindelberger sibling which don't have discrepancies in year of birth.
