Hiram Brown 1842-1933, Co. C, 10th Reg PA vol., GAR Marker, Section G
----------------------------------
Obituary: Unknown Paper, 23 January 1933:
Hiram Brown, 90, Well-known Civil War Veteran, Dies
Death Removes One of Franklin's Outstanding Figures--Had Part in Many War Battles
Active in Church, G.A.R.
--
Hiram Brown, aged 90, one of the oldest and best known residents of Franklin, prominent in Grand Army circles and in the activities of the First Evangelical church, died at 7 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Osborne, 217 8th Street, where he had lived since the death of his wife last February.
Mr. Brown was born on July 3, 1842, in Bennington, Genesee county, N.Y. He came to Franklin at the age of six years and from that time was continuously a resident of this city except for the three years he was absent as a member of Company C, Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Relief Volunteer Corps.
He enlisted in the Union Army in April 1861, and was in 18 battles, including some of the largest and most severe ones. He was stationed on Little Round Top in the battle of Gettysburg, which incidentally had its climax on his birthday aniversary, and had a good view of Pickett's unsuccessful charge against Cemetery ridge. Mr. Brown last summer was taken by relatives on a trip to the battle ground.
His last battle was at Spottsylvania, Virginia, May 8-12, 1864, and his term of enlistment closed soon afterwards. He was in the battle of the Wilderness, which just preceded Spottsylvania. He retained his interest in his soldier affiliations on his return to civilian life, and was always a member of Mays Post 220, Grand Army of the Republic, and held a number of its offices. At the time of his death he was Officer of the Day.
Policeman and Detective.
Mr. Brown was a member of the Franklin police force for seven years and was constable for more than 20 years. He was the county detective of Venango county for 10 years or more and humane agent for a period extending beyond 12 years. In these various capacities he was one of the most familiar figures in Franklin, and known to nearly everybody. No one was held in higher esteem because of his genial qualities and his high standards of citizenship and attitude on public questions.
Mr. Brown was for many years affiliated as a member of the Evangelical church, now the Frist Evangelical church. He worshipped in three different church edifices on the site of the present one. During his membership there of 46 years and his service as a trustee for 33 years, he helped to build two of these edifices. He was a Sunday school teacher for many years, and was distinguished for regularity in church attendance.
Mr. Brown was first married to Hattie Smith, daughter of Captain John Smith, on May 11, 1865. To them were born the following children: Effie Brown Smith, Pattie Brown Keely, Charles Brown, now deceased, and Maud Brown Osborne. Mr. Brown's second marriage was to Mary Hugus in 1886. She preceded him in death February 25, 1932.
The funeral services are to be held at the First Evangelical church at 2:30 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon. The body will be taken to the church at 1 o'clock and lie in state from that hour until the funeral. Interment will be in the Franklin cemetery.

Obituary: Unknown newspaper, 23 January 1932:
Hiram Brown, Veteran
The death of Hiram Brown, at the age of 90, came as a sad shock to the many friends in Franklin and vicinity, who throughout the years knew him as a sturdy and upright citizen, an interested church member and a veteran of the Civil War.
His passing brings poignantly to the fore the sad fact that months are clipping short the lives of those who served in the Civil War, whose memories now in their declining years are rich in detail of that conflict. Their stories, for the most part, are told to a generation which has almost forgotten there was a Spanish-American War, and to those who have little idea of the World War except what they read in text-books. Time passes, and with it the scenes of battle. The anecdotes only of a pleasurable or humorous nature remain--and well it is.
Mr. Brown served this district in the capacity of county detective for some years, then as humane officer. The death of his wife about a year ago came as a sad shock to him, for they had been a devoted couple.
Hiram Brown and his interest in the G.A.R. brought prestige and honor to that organization; aided in keeping on high level the traditions of the service, and the memories and incidents of that conflict. All honor to him, and to those faithful members, few of whom now survive, but to whom every homage and every consideration most certainly is due.

The News-Herald, Franklin PA Clipping, Unknown Date:
Hiram Brown Tells of Capture of Corn in Civil War Battle
Hiram Brown was at The News-Herald office today and recalled the battle of Dranesville, VA., in the early part of 1861, his first battle.
Three Pennsylvania Regiments, a squadron of cavalry and a battery of artillery were sent out after a thousand bushels of corn known to be at a certain place, and on the way they fell in with an equal force of three Regiments and a squadron of cavalry and a battery of artillery. A lively fight ensued, ending in the retreat of the Confederates and the capture of the corn by the Federals.
This was one of the few Federal victories of that period in Virginia and attracted wide attraction. General Winfield B. Scott, General George B. McClellan and President Abraham Lincoln visited camp to congratulate the victors. General E. O. C. Ord, their commander rose steadily in rank throughout the war and was one of General Grant's immediate subordinates at the surrender of Lee.
Mr. Brown saw other battles beyond all comparison, greater than Dranesville, including Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spottsylvania.

There is conflicting information on Charles Brown's date of birth. His father's (Lyman Avery Brown, Jr.) Civil War Veteran's records list his birthdate as February 13, 1870 and his sister Blanche's as June 20, 1871. These dates are inconsistent with their mother's date of birth (Abt. 1860) and her date of marriage (April 12, 1879). Both his death certificate and his social security application list his birthdate as February 13, 1880. I believe the 1880 date is correct. I believe that Blanche was also born ten years later in 1881.
