Obituary, Venango Citizens Press, December 18, 1916:

Bertley Brown, life-long resident of Franklin and vicinity and one of Rocky Groves best known men, died at 2:45 o'clock Tuesday morning at his home on Lamberton street. Bright's disease, with which he had been ill for almost two weeks, is said to have been the cause of death.

Mr. Brown was born in Franklin on November 17,1854 and on Christmas day, 1877, married Miss Estella Adams whose death occurred in September of 1904. The deceased was in the service of the Eclipse Oil Works for a period of 25 or 30 years and continued to work there until about two years ago when he retired on a pension. He had been a faithful employee enjoying the friendship not only of his co-workers, but of his neighbors and many Franklinites as well.

Surviving are the following children: Mae and Florence Brown at home: J. A. Brown of Franklin:R.L and R.N. Brown and Mrs. C. W. McDaniels of Rocky Grove :Mrs. C. B. Blauser of Oil City:and Mrs. D. A. McClintock of Meadville.

Three brother and a sister are surviving: They are Hiram and Lyman Brown of Franklin: Myron Brown of Rocky Grove: and Mrs. Martha Shorts of Prospect Park.

SHORTS, Thomas W., 66, died at hsi home on Park Avenue, Prospect Park, on Monday. The deceased was born in Victory twp., and spent practically all his life with the exception of 8 or 9 years in Eas Aurora, NY. The deceased was a dairyman. He was twice married, his first wife being Catherine Tibbens, whom he married about 46 tears ago. His second wife, whom he leaves, was Mrs. Robert Lowery of Franklin. Besides his wife the following children survive: Harvey, of North Randall, Ohio; Louis of Erie; Sheridan, of Canton, Ohio; Raymond , of Lima, Ohio; Oran, of Franklin; and Thomas Shorts, of Franklin, and two daughters, Mrs. William Rupp, of North Collins, NY, and Mrs. Robert Kelsy, of Franklin, also several step-children. Interment Franklin Cemetery.
